Beating Astigmatism

Those who suffer from astigmatism are fortunate in comparison to previous generations. Twenty or more years ago, having this problem which involves blurred vision was a serious issue because there was no real treatment available. People from back then suffered silently in the dark where the are almost literally left at.

The field of ophthalmology have ensured, through the remarkable improvements they made that blurred vision is not anymore a hindrance to the normal life that you once had. The methods of treatments available as well as the causes and symptoms of this condition are now very much known to millions of people who suffer from it. Astigmatism is an actual eye problem unlike presbyopia which occurs as a person ages.

Perfect vision comes from light rays that get into the eye in all directions which normally happens when the cornea has the same curves in each direction. But in the event when the cornea is curved in different ways, light rays focus in several different areas. Due to the wildly focused light rays, blurred vision starts to distort the appearance of all objects.

The eye is only able to focus on a small part of the light rays that enter it which is why an objects outline can be seen but nothing more. Those with blurred vision have oval shaped cornea however the ideal should be sphere in shape. Cornea with normal shape can also be possible with astigmatism in instances where the eye lens have a problem. It is usually quite obvious when someone suffers from this condition because of the blurred vision yet too many people ignore this clear symptom. Symptoms that are less apparent such as headache is commonly caused by excess squinting.

In order for a person to focus on something that he/she is not able to see clearly, he/she strains the eyes. This said strain will then result to headaches. One of the first problems that children with astigmatism encounter is the inability to focus on a certain book. Unlike during those dark times from years ago, special contact lenses are currently available to those whose visions are blurred. Ophthalmologists will prescribe corrective lenses after determining the condition during a routine eye exam. These are designed to fit the shape of the eye perfectly and enable light ray to get into the eyes in a manner that they are supposed to and they are called toric lenses.

Although there are proponents of laser surgery, this is a costly procedure which may not even result in better vision for patients than what they would receive from toric lenses. Symptoms of astigmatism may not be taken note of because of the very busy lives that we live believing that our blurred vision is only a result of exhaustion. If you feel that this condition could be the reason for you seeing distorted images, contact an ophthalmologist immediately for an eye test. Toric lenses will surely do wonders on your vision and quality of living despite discovering that you have astigmatism. If this problem is not addressed properly, it could lead to a certain point where you can no longer do anything about it.
